DICE kindly permitted us a chance for a 10-question interview about Battlefield 2. Jamil Dawsari, the assistant producer of BF2, answered our questions. This text has been translated to finnish and it can be found here. And here we go:
1. BF.fi: How did you end up with this subject instead of continuing the popular WWII theme?
- Jamil: It seemed the logical place to go with the Battlefield franchise. Moving to the modern era gives us the opportunity to introduce new gameplay and new settings.
2. BF.fi: What changes have you done with the maps, especially looking from clan match view?
- Jamil: Maps are always designed with playability and fun gameplay in mind. As for clan matches, most are run with two rounds and the clans switching sides between rounds. That way nobody has the advantage.
3. BF.fi: In earlier interviews you've told some strategically important objects can be destroyed. Is there anything else that's destroyable? For example boxes or fences. Do those things stay destroyed to the end
of the round?
- Jamil: Yes, there are other destructible items. Some have gameplay impact such as portions of fences which allow players to take different routes into areas or explosive barrels which offer seductive cover...until you realize what you're hiding behind. Others are just for the fun of it such as traffic lights and parking meters...which are just fun to run over with a tank.
4. BF.fi: How will the official server system work? Will every country have its own official servers? If not, do for example Finnish players have to play in an English server to raise their honor level? If this is the case, have you thought about the ping difference and its affection on game play?
- Jamil: DICE and EA are working to get a ranked server in as many territories as possible. We want to create a level playing field.
5. BF.fi: In BF1942 even the smallest rock would stop your tank if you hit it. Have you made any changes to this so that you can drive over them? If so, will there be bushes that fall to the ground when you drive over them?
- Jamil: BFV is a good example of where we are going. We have 'overgrowth' and 'undergrowth' - tanks can go through undergrowth, e.g. bushes, small rocks, etc, but are stopped by overgrowth, e.g. trees.
6. BF.fi: Nowadays more and more females start playing computer games seriously. I know many female Battlefield players so that's why I'm asking will there be possibility to create a female character? It would be really nice to see females fighting for the same thing that you are.
- Jamil: There won't be a female character in BF2 when it ships.
7. BF.fi: If you were prone near a wall in BF1942, your feet could be showing through that wall. Have you fixed this problem?
- Jamil: Not yet, but we're in bug-fix mode now.
8. BF.fi: When you were in a moving carrier in BF1942 it was very hard to walk and nearly do anything. Even the planes were able to take off almost vertically. Have you made any changes to this?
- Jamil: This issue won't affect Battlefield 2.
9. BF.fi: We know the main point in BF2 is multiplayer but there's still people out there who will buy the game for its singleplayer. That's why we are asking if the Commander Mode will be available in it? If so, does AI know how to use it properly?
- Jamil: The AI has seen some revamping in BF2. It knows how to use both the Squad system and the Commander system. It uses tactics such as covering fire and using flanking manuevers. It has true 3d positional path finding so the AI can hunt you down if you camp on a rooftop. The AI will use all of the new weapons systems. The AI has behaviour that seems frightingly realistic, e.g. it will drop C4 on a CP...and when it sees that CP go to neutral...BOOM! It will use knifes and the defibrillator when close. Snipers will attack at long range while Engineers with their shotgun move in close.
10. BF.fi: In both previous games, BF1942 and Vietnam, tanks had a weak spot where they could be destroyed easily. Do you use the same idea in BF2, so that any antitank can destroy any tank if he knows where to shoot?
- Jamil: Battlefield is all about rock/paper/scissors...balance is key to the success of our gameplay. the 'weak spot' which you noticed in BF1942 and BFV is an example of this philosophy.
Thanks DICE for this interview!
